Pigeon Loft Cleaning: A Simple Daily and Weekly Routine

Pigeon loft cleaning: a scraper and brush on a clean loft floor with pigeons on box perches

Pigeon loft cleaning is easiest as a fixed routine: scrape the droppings and refresh water and feed every day, then give perches, nest boxes and the floor a more thorough clean once a week. A few minutes daily keeps the loft dry and fresh, which does more for the birds’ condition than an occasional big clean-out.

The daily routine

Most fanciers clean at the same time every day, often in the morning when the birds are out for exercise. A simple daily list:

  • Scrape the perches and floor with a loft scraper, or empty the tray under a grill floor.
  • Clean and refill drinkers with fresh water.
  • Remove leftover feed so it does not spoil or attract vermin.
  • Look at the droppings: firm, well-formed droppings are a quick sign that the team is doing well.

The weekly clean

Once a week, go a step further. Clean out nest boxes, brush down walls and corners, wash feeders and drinkers thoroughly and check for damp patches. Some fanciers cover the floor with a thin layer of sand or a dry litter that is replaced regularly; others prefer a bare floor that is scraped clean every day. Both can work, as long as the loft stays dry.

After the racing season and before breeding, many lofts get a deep clean: everything out, surfaces scrubbed and left to dry completely before the birds go back in.

Why dust and damp matter

Dry droppings create dust, and wet droppings create damp; neither is good for the birds’ airways. That is why cleaning and airflow go together. A loft with good ventilation dries quickly and stays fresher between cleans. The article on pigeon loft ventilation explains why air matters more than space, and pigeon loft design shows how smart details, such as grill floors and removable trays, make cleaning quicker. When you build or buy, think about cleaning first, as the guide on how to build a pigeon loft also advises.

Loft care in WingDerby

In WingDerby, the free pigeon racing management game in your browser, you do not scrape perches, but you do take care of the loft every day. You choose the feed quality, where basic feed is cheaper but builds no form and raises the risk of sickness, as well as the loft feed mix and the type of loft training. Those choices decide how your birds’ form (0–100) moves from day to day.

You can also hire staff, such as a caretaker, and add buildings like an aviary to strengthen your loft. Like cleaning in a real loft, it is the daily routine that separates a healthy, winning team from one that slowly falls behind.
